What is Great Success

What is great success? I pondered on this question this morning when I read a quote from Abraham Lincoln. “That some achieve great success is proof to all that others can achieve it as well.”  In an older blog, I wrote a blog that focuses on the “Who Determines Success” and if you read it, you know the “who” is “You.”

Webster defines success as “the fact of getting or achieving wealth respect, or fame.” I grew up with 5 siblings and my parents were not able to give us everything we wanted.  They always made sure our needs were supplied, but any desires outside of that were rarely met.  So I would say to myself, “When I grow up, I will do this or that.” What determines great success?

What is Great SuccessAs children, we have big plans for ourselves not understanding the full magnitude of them. It always includes lots of money that we thought would be at our disposal. Money equals success in our little eyes.  Little did we know that money doesn’t come easily and we have to work for it? What’s even more interesting is, as an adult, we still have some of those same. We tend to equate success to money and possessions. If you don’t live in a big house, a particular development, or have major possessions we are considered unsuccessful.

So the opposite is having these things will make you successful. Do you know having major possessions is a form of success but don’t mean you’re successful? WOW! Now that is a statement. Luke 9:25 says, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?”

Money is Not Bad

Now before I go on, let me say immediately that I am not speaking against major possessions or money. It is a great thing to have. Only you can determine how successful you are and in some cases it is not about the money. It could be having a loving family, support of others, or helping others. What is great success? The truth is from my prospective is You. 3 John 1:2 says, “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.”

I am reminded of the movie “Death Becomes Her,” where Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn were trying to conquer the fountain of youth.  Both of them drank a magic potion that retained their youthful look.  Both women tried to murder each other only to find out they couldn’t die.  Because of these attempts, their youthful beauty became disfigured and ugly.  Fast forward to the end – they are at a church attending the funeral of their ex-husband who went on to have a beautiful family and children that loved him.  The movie ends with both of them recognizing they achieved nothing.  Bruce had accomplished all of it before he died and their definition of success was wrong.

Conclusion

I challenge you today to think about the word success and ask yourself the question, what is great success? Is it tangible or nontangible items?  Is it monetary or just living comfortably?  Really think about what great success means to you.  Now apply this to your home business, are you where you want to be in your business or can you do more?

Strive to be Successful today!
